#SOTU by the Numbers

With the rise of social media and the “second screen” trend, the State of the Union is not simply a speech anymore. It’s a boon for online engagement and conversation. Here is a quick look at the top numbers for last night’s speech:

Twitter

There were over 2.6 million twitter users that tweeted with the hashtag #SOTU

Unsurprisingly, the top retweeted tweet was the President’s quip about having won both his presidential campaigns.

Facebook

According to Facebook, 5.7 million users made 13.8 million interactions (likes, posts, comments, shares) related to the State of the Union Address.

Interestingly enough, discussion of the address was not limited to younger demographics. Here are the most engaged demographics talking about the SOTU address on Facebook:

Women 18-34
Men 18-34
Women 35-49
Men 35-49
Men 50+

Additionally, the top states that discussed the #SOTU on Facebook included three swing states:


North Carolina
Pennsylvania
Texas
Wisconsin
South Carolina
